Created by Dave Taylor

The first three volumes of a series of books about wonderful miniatures art.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Folk Horrors
almost 2 years ago – Fri, Jun 03, 2022 at 09:42:54 AM

Hot on the heels of the conclusion of THE ART OF... Volumes 4-6, I felt it was imortant to make sure that as many folks who had backed Ana Polanscak's book (Volume 03) last year should see that the minis featured in the Folk Horrors spread are now available in a Kickstarter from Andrew May of Meridian Miniatures. Andrew's campaigns are always great, and deliver on time. This one is the seventh I've backed personally.

It's a simple campaign, with only a few days remaining. Check it out now if you would love to own some more of Ana's work.

Cheers

Final Days of THE ART OF... Volumes 4-6, plus a new PDF for you all!
almost 2 years ago – Mon, May 30, 2022 at 11:49:19 PM

We are into the final days of the Kickstarter for Volumes 4-6, HERE, and we thought we'd show you a little bit of the content you can expect to see in one of the books (in this case, Volume 6 from Seyni N'diaye).

Those who follow Seyni on Instagram (@nebriuson) will know that he is a big fan of pushing colors and contrasts, but it's not all brightly-colored renditions of beautiful busts. Seyni also brings his gorgeous approach to the grimdark. These photos are from his "Necromunda Vampire" warband, where twisted fantasy elements are blended with cruel and vicious technology, along with a helping of cordyceps-controlled zombies!

Here are some of Seyni's thoughts on tackling the use of color.

"Bring The Color In

In this section I'll present my thoughts on colors and how I handle it in my works. It is mostly a feeling thing more than a full-fledged process I meticulously follow every time, but it's a feeling that can be developed over time by experimenting and observing the results closely. I do have some key angles and tricks that I often use and have refined over time through practice. It's these tricks I'll walk you through in this section.

1- Feed the shadows

My experiments with colors started with the realization that shadows on a miniature were not meant to be forgotten spaces of lesser interest, but rather an opportunity to create a deeper level of interest overall. It is an opportunity to work in concert with the highlight to bring more contrast, be it light, textures or colors.

I started mainly with complementary colors. The idea was to use shadows chromatically opposite to the area highlighted."

We'll definitely have a broad range of approaches and views in the pages of these three Volumes. If you haven't already, please head on over to Kickstarter and check them out HERE!

Earlier this year we sent out links to the tutorial PDFs we unlocked in last year's campaign, but there was a noticeable absence that wasn't quite ready at the time, and then when other things came up, it simply slipped my mind. Thanks to one_who_feeds, I was reminded of the PDF from Matt DiPietro, which has been sitting ready since March. My most humble apologies for not getting it uploaded and the link sent out to you all. But here it finally is. My thanks to everyone for their patience.

The Ana Polanscak Gaming Tokens are here!
about 2 years ago – Fri, Apr 22, 2022 at 10:14:50 PM

After many months of poor service from the printing company we used for these excellent gaming tokens, they are now in our hot little hands!

These double-sided, die-cut sheets were add-ons from last year's Kickstarter, with art designed by Ana, and SHOULD have gone out to those backers who purchased them with the books. Unfortunately they were significantly delayed, but now they are here and, despite poor communication from the printers, the tokens are themselves very cool (and sturdy)!

Ironheart Artisans have packaged up all of the rewards for all of those backers and have shipped them out this week (if you are one of these backers you will have received and email from Ironheart). This hopefully means they'll start arriving from next week and folks can start including them in their gaming.

We do have additional copies of these sheets, and Ironheart will soon have them up on their website for purchase. I will let you all know when those are available.

Thank you all for your patience and support. Have a great weekend!

Cheers

THE ART OF... Volumes 4-6 Coming Soon!
about 2 years ago – Tue, Apr 19, 2022 at 05:01:55 AM

It is with great pleasure to announce that we have assembled another wonderful team of artists for Volumes Four, Five, and Six of THE ART OF... series. I'm very happy to be working with each of these artists, whose work has impressed, excited, and inspired me at some point over the last decade or so.

Our Pre-Launch page is now up and running. Follow this link and then click the "Notify Me" button to be notified when the project goes live on May 10th. Please also share this link with as many folks as you can. We would love to make this as successful as we can.

Here's a look at the mock-up covers for these Volumes, along with a quick idea of the focus of each artist in their book and a link to their Instagram so that you can see more of their work.

Chris Suhre will be presenting his thoughts on story-telling, dioramas, composition, and many other elements of his work in Volume Four. You can see more of his work on Instagram HERE.

Tommie Soule (aka The Miniature Painting Tutor) will be presenting his approach to teaching miniatures painting, developed over more than a decade of tutoring both large classes and individual students. Tommie will strip away much of the jargon we use and demystify the mechanics of painting minis. You can see more of Tommie's work on Instagram HERE.

Seyni N'diaye will be presenting his thoughts on his journey through painting with a focus on his passion for color, texture, and patterns. Seyni's vibrant choices have been applied across dozens of projects from armies, award-winning heroes, and characterful busts. You can see more of his work on Instagram HERE.

There you have it, another great collection of artists/authors who will perhaps challenge the way you think about miniatures painting as art, and inspire you to try something different with your own art. We are very excited to bring you this campaign!
